How to Hang Paper Star Lanterns: A Complete Guide

Paper star lanterns add a magical touch to any space, whether you’re decorating for the holidays, a special event, or simply creating a cozy ambiance at home. If you’ve recently purchased a paper star lantern from us, this guide will walk you through the best ways to hang and illuminate your star for a stunning display.

Choosing the Right Paper Star Lantern

Paper star lanterns come in various sizes, colors, and designs. When selecting one, consider the space you’re decorating and the mood you want to create. Larger stars make bold statements, while smaller ones are great for clustering.

Understanding Different Sizes

Our paper star lanterns are available in 16.5 inches, 23.6 inches and 34.25 inches in diameter. Bigger stars work well for outdoor spaces, while smaller ones are ideal for windows and cozy indoor settings.

Color and Design Selection

Choose warm colors like red and gold for a festive atmosphere, or opt for neutral and pastel tones for a subtle, elegant look.

Essential Supplies You’ll Need

To hang your paper star lantern, you’ll need:

  • Ceiling hooks or adhesive hooks (for indoor use)

  • Fishing line or string (for a floating effect)

  • Fairy lights or an LED bulb (for illumination)

How to Assemble Your Paper Star Lantern

Every star is a one-off creation entirely handmade from natural materials - take care when you open it, carefully following the instructions enclosed. Watch this video here which shows you how to open and hang it.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Your star will arrive flat packed. To open your star lantern, hold the star flat, place one hand inside one of the outermost points and gently ease the point of the star outwards.

  2. With the remaining points of the star repeat this action. Ensure that each point is opened out before continuing on to the next.

  3. If adding lights, insert them before closing the star.

  4. Using the two pieces of cord provided, gently bring the two outermost points together, place over light fitting and tie cords firmly, avoiding direct contact with the light bulb.

    Tips for Avoiding Tears

  • Open the star gently to prevent creases and make sure each point is opened out before moving on to the next.

  • If a tear happens, use clear tape on the inside to reinforce it.

FAQs

1. Can paper star lanterns be used outdoors?

Yes, but they should be placed in covered areas or protected from rain and strong winds.

2. What type of lightbulb should I use in my star lantern?

We recommend using LED bulbs, as they emit little to no heat, making them the safest choice. Make sure that the wattage of your light bulb does not exceed 40 watts - we recommend LED lamps between 1.5 – 5.5 watts. As they are paper stars, your star light should not be used with a candle and should be kept away from naked flames.

All Paper Starlights' lanterns are British Standard tested and comply with BS EN 60598-1: 2015

3. How do I store my paper star lantern when not in use?

Fold it flat and store it in a dry, cool place to prevent damage.

4. Can I hang my paper star lantern from a tree?

Yes! Just make sure to use sturdy string or fishing line and keep it away from open flames.

5. Can paper star lanterns be used in children’s rooms?

Yes, as long as they are hung securely!
